Cape Cod Foundation Chairman Elected into National Academy of Engineering

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) recently elected Dr. Sharon Nunes of Falmouth, the current Chairman of The Cape Cod Foundation, into its membership for her accomplishments in corporate leadership and the development of next-generation green technologies, focused on novel materials and processes.  This is one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Nunes is one of 86 new members in the United States to receive the honor this year.

During her 28-year career with IBM, Nunes helped launch two global businesses for the industry leader: Life Sciences (2001) and Big Green Innovations (2006), which became one of the cornerstones of IBM’s Smarter Planet program.

By merging her background in Materials Science and Engineering with her knowledge of Information Technology, she was able to anticipate new business needs and identify new areas of growth for the company.

Nunes held numerous executive positions in several areas of IBM’s businesses. She helped lead the company’s Global Women’s Council and served as co-chair of the global “Women in Technology” committee.  In 2004, she received IBM’s Fran Allen Mentoring Award, and in 2006, the National Association of Female Executives (NAFE) honored her with its “Women of Excellence” award for mentoring technical women. In 2009, Women’s History Month recognized her as one of the “Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet.” She was also inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame.

Nunes received her Ph.D. in Materials Science in 1983 from the University of Connecticut.  She is an emeritus member of the university’s Foundation Board of Directors and a member of its Engineering Advisory Board. She was also a “Frontiers of Engineering” fellow and a member of the “Engineer of 2020” advisory board with the National Academy of Engineering. In 2006, she was inducted into the University of Connecticut Academy of Engineering for Distinguished Engineers.

Dr. Nunes is also the Chair of the Advisory Board for The Falmouth Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation and an active volunteer at the Falmouth Service Center and Cotuit Center for the Arts.
