GALE Fund Announces 2019 Grantees

The GALE (Gay and Lesbian Equity) Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation recently awarded $4,000 in grants to two local nonprofit organizations for their work supporting issues facing the region’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community. Since the fund’s inception in 1998, it has raised and distributed more than $260,000 to local organizations. The 2019 recipients are:

Cape Cod Theatre Company/Harwich Junior Theatre, $2,000

This grant supports Theatre of The Oppressed, an interactive and experiential workshop created by Brazilian director, popular educator, and political activist Augusto Boal to drive social change. This fall, participants will engage in a variety of games and exercises designed to open dialogues about discrimination in every form and rehearse for action in the real world.  The program encourages participants to look at their own, often unseen, biases to foster a climate of transformation and acceptance outside the theatre.

Orleans Council on Aging and Senior Center, $2,000

This grant supports programming for The Lower Cape LGBT Seniors Group.  Established in 2013, it was the first of its kind on Cape Cod. The goal of the monthly programs is to strengthen the sense of community for LGBT persons aged 55+ to support healthy aging and prevent isolation.  Throughout the year, the Center provides seniors with a variety of social and educational opportunities in a welcoming place.
