In 2012, Nauset Regional Middle School was awarded a grant of $1,000 from the GALE (Gay and Lesbian Equity) Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation to provide a resource library at the school for those in search of accurate information by and about GLBTQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning) individuals. Resources are accessible to teachers, students, and families. One of the students that was involved with raising funds and working with other members of the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance group to establish the resource library spoke at the GALE Fund’s annual Spring Fling fundraiser and made such a tremendous impact on the over 100 attendees that the GALE Fund decided their “Fund a Need” for that evening would be focused on raising funds that could be granted in 2013 specifically to assist other local schools with expanding their available GLBTQ educational materials.
“I am proud our school has become this place-where students share and gather news about the issues affecting them and their families. The library is used by classrooms, by groups of students, and by individuals looking for information, support, and validation. It makes a difference every day in the lives of middle school-age students to know that they can find what they are looking for or know it is safe to ask…”
