Cape Cod Association Appoints New Board Members

The Cape Cod Association (CCA), one of the oldest and largest independent scholarship funds in New England, has appointed Sherry Greene-Starr and John Fulone to its Board of Directors. Last year, the Association awarded more than $430,000 in scholarships to 286 local students.

Greene-Starr brings a diverse background to the Cape Cod Association. Throughout her career, she has worked extensively in early childhood education and the mental health industry. Currently, she serves as a Library Assistant at Barnstable West Barnstable Elementary School, a position she has held for the past thirteen years.  Greene-Starr’s community service is extensive. She is a founding member of the Summer Dance Theatre and a former member of the Board of Trustees at Sturgis Library. She has also sourced, written, and secured a variety of grants to benefit community members working in environmental and educational fields. Her volunteer work includes leading the West Barnstable Spaghetti Supper’s Youth Volunteer Program, supporting the Family Pantry of Cape Cod Community College, and serving on the Cape Cod Association’s scholarship committee for several years.  The West Barnstable resident was born in Connecticut and grew up in New York.  She earned a BA in psychology from Vassar College. Each of her three children received a scholarship from the Cape Cod Association.

Fulone has nearly three decades of banking experience and a demonstrated commitment to community service.  As the Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer for The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod in Hyannis, he oversees the bank’s philanthropic initiatives and community partnerships. Prior to joining the bank’s team in 2011, he served as a Vice President for RBS Citizens Financial Group in Dedham for more than a decade.  Fulone earned a bachelor’s degree from Assumption College in Worcester and graduated from The Strategy and Service Excellence Program administered through the Harvard Business School of Executive Education. In 2015, he received the Banker & Tradesman “Community Bank Heroes” Award. Fulone is a member of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee at Heritage Museums and Gardens, is President of the Board of Directors of Mashpee TV, and serves as a board member for the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod and Calmer Choice. He has also been a member of the Mentor Exchange Program with the Cape Cod Young Professionals for three years.  Fulone lives in Mashpee with his wife, Sharon.

“We are honored to have two individuals who are so invested in the community join our efforts to support today’s students who will, in turn, become tomorrow’s leaders,” said David W. (Woody) Foster, Jr., President of the CCA Board of Directors.

Other CCA Board Members include:  Nancy S. Lowry, Vice President; Sally Walker Helwig, Treasurer; James Vaccaro, Clerk; and Larry Thayer, The Cape Cod Foundation Board liaison.

The Cape Cod Association, a supporting organization of The Cape Cod Foundation, has a long and rich history in the region.  In 1851, a group of successful gentlemen living and working off-Cape came together to support one another and stave off the loneliness they felt for their beloved peninsula.  Later, the group began offering tuition assistance to help other Cape Codders pursue their dreams.

Applicants who were born on and reside on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, or Nantucket are eligible to apply for the annual scholarships. Academic merit, extracurricular activities, and financial need are also considered. Scholarships are offered to graduating high school seniors and college students for up to four years of an undergraduate program. Applicants may attend two- and four-year colleges, technical schools, and community colleges anywhere in the United States.
