Scholarship Fund Established in Memory of David Scudder

YARMOUTHPORT – Friends and family of David Scudder have established a scholarship fund at The Cape Cod Foundation in his memory. The scholarship will support graduating high school seniors or continuing college students from Cape Cod with a preference given to students who are graduating/did graduate from Barnstable High School attending a New England Small College (NESCAC) with preference given to students attending Colby College, David’s alma mater. Scholarship applications will be available through The Cape Cod Foundation in early 2015.

David’s passion and commitment to Cape Cod were strong. A native Cape Codder, he graduated from Barnstable High School, where he was an exceptional scholar athlete who received many honors and awards and was inducted into the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He remained a passionate Red Raider throughout his life. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Colby College, where he played varsity hockey and baseball and was a member of Kappa Delta Rho. After completing his education, David returned to Cape Cod to join the family business, Hy-Line Cruises, where he had worked summers since the age of 16.

Throughout his adult life, David was an active and committed member of the community serving on a number of town boards.  He was a board member of the Cape and Islands United Way since 2002, which included a term as Chairman.  David’s passion for the water led him to the Cape Cod Maritime Museum where he was a board member for 10 years and served as its Director from 2009 to 2013.

“David’s dedication to friends, family and his beloved Cape Cod was limitless.  We, his friends and family, have created this scholarship as a lasting tribute to David’s generosity of spirit and commitment to the people and place he so proudly called “Home”.  Through his service both professionally and as a community volunteer David touched the lives of countless Cape Cod youth; it is our hope that this fund shall continue David’s lasting impact for generations to come.”   Paul Philbin, classmate, teammate and fraternity brother, Colby College.
