Another Record-breaking Year for The Cape Cod Foundation: More Than $560,000 In Scholarships Awarded

The Cape Cod Foundation recently awarded more than $560,000 in scholarships to 152 local students from Cape Cod and the Islands who are beginning or continuing their higher education or pursuing certificate programs. Its partner, the Cape Cod Association, awarded $464,000 to 334 students this year. Together, the organizations have exceeded $1 million in scholarship support this year.

“This is an incredible milestone for the Foundation, now celebrating its 30th anniversary,” said Kristin O’Malley, President and CEO of The Cape Cod Foundation. “We started with a single scholarship fund in 1989 and have experienced incredible growth over the years. I am honored to live in a community that values the pursuit of knowledge. Education is one of the greatest gifts you can give–as well as receive—at any time in your life. We look forward to continuing to work with the community to meet unmet needs and support even more students with their educational endeavors.”

More than 200 people attended the annual reception on June 13 at the Sea View in Dennis Port, where many scholarship donors and review committee members met the recipients in person for the first time.  The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod sponsored the event.

Caroline Neville from Barnstable was the guest speaker.  The Boston College student, scholarship recipient, and Cape Cod Foundation intern advised this year’s recipients to seek out opportunity because it comes in unexpected places and to embrace failure because it teaches you how to improve.

Some of this year’s students will be pursuing degrees nearby at Cape Cod Community College and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Others will be venturing farther from home to study at Northeastern University, Suffolk University, Villanova University, Boston College, Emmanuel College, Middlebury College, Smith College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and other fine colleges and universities throughout the United States. They will prepare for careers in business, law, engineering, medicine, politics, social work, environmental sciences, education, technology, and the arts.

The Cape Cod Foundation currently has 86 active scholarship funds totaling over $10.7 million in principal that award scholarships annually to students in our region.
