The Cape Cod Foundation Awards More Than $690,000 In Scholarships

SOUTH YARMOUTH–The Cape Cod Foundation recently awarded 164 scholarships totaling more than $690,000 to support students from Cape Cod and the Islands who are beginning or continuing their higher education or pursuing certificate programs. Its partner, the Cape Cod Association, awarded over $476,000 to 305 students. Together, the organizations exceeded $1.1 million in scholarship support for the first time.

Some of this year’s students will pursue degrees nearby at Cape Cod Community College and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Others will venture farther from home to study at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Cornell University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Chaminade University of Honolulu.

They are preparing for careers in business administration, law, engineering, medicine, politics, social work, environmental sciences, education, technology, and the arts.

The Cape Cod Foundation currently administers more than 80 active funds that award scholarships annually to students throughout the region. More than 300 individuals applied for scholarships this year.

“Since each one can apply for multiple scholarships, our committee had nearly 2,000 completed applications to review,” said Kristin O’Malley, President and CEO of The Cape Cod Foundation. “More than 200 volunteers who are committed to education and helping local students achieve their dreams participate in this intensive selection process each year.”

O’Malley added, “While we were able to increase scholarship support by 10% this year, the need for additional educational resources for community members is great.”
