The Falmouth Fund: Jay Mitchell
JOSEPH (JAY) MITCHELL retired after a 38-year career in healthcare and public services. Jay’s most recent role was the Managing Director of the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) Jamaica Plain Campus — home to the New England Newborn Screening Program, the Massachusetts Supranational TB Reference Laboratory, the Massachusetts Biologics Laboratory, and the DPH State Laboratory. He also held operational responsibility for the UMMS Eunice Shriver Center for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
Prior to working at UMMS, Jay held senior positions in three hospitals, where he navigated these organizations through major ownership, financial, and operational transitions. Earlier in Jay’s career, he held senior positions with the Massachusetts Departments of Youth Services and Mental Health. In addition, he was Executive Director of the MA State Lottery Commission, responsible for all aspects of the $4.2 billion enterprise.
Over the past 30 years, Jay has volunteered for several nonprofit Boards, ranging from health and mental health services to youth hockey programs. He was also a Town Meeting member and College Trustee. Since his retirement, he has been an active volunteer at Hand-in-Hand Thrift Shop in Falmouth, which is under the umbrella of the Falmouth Service Center. Jay is also a member of the Finance Committee at the Service Center. Jay has spent time on Cape Cod his whole life. He and his wife Beth Everett have called Falmouth home since 2013.
Together, we have invested more than $106 million in grants and scholarships in the Cape Cod Community. For good.
