The Fund for Sandwich Sponsors Presentation about Artist Georgia O’Keeffe with Author and Art Historian Wanda Corn

SOUTH YARMOUTH —The Fund for Sandwich of The Cape Cod Foundation will sponsor a presentation about artist Georgia O’Keeffe by Wanda Corn, author of Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern and Professor Emerita in Art History at Stanford University. The event will take place on Thursday, April 28, at 7 pm at the Sand Hill School Community Center, at 16 Dewey Avenue in Sandwich.

In her talk, A Signature Style: Georgia O’Keeffe’s Art, Clothes, and Home Décor, Corn will discuss how the artist’s work and possessions shed new light on her creativity and brilliance.

As a pioneer abstractionist and innovative painter, Georgia O’Keeffe stood on the front lines of modern art in the early twentieth century. She was a prominent member of the circle of artists around Alfred Stieglitz. When she died in 1986, she left behind a lifetime of paintings and two homes she had carefully reconstructed and imaginatively furnished in northern New Mexico. Her closets contained an abundance of clothing, pieces she had sewn for herself or commissioned others to make.

“The artist lived and dressed like she painted, highly valuing abstraction, simplicity, and seriality,” Corn said.

At Stanford, Corn held the university’s first permanent appointment in the history of American art and served as chair of the Department of Art and Art History and acting director of the Stanford Museum. Active as a guest curator, she has produced various books and exhibitions, including The Art of Andrew Wyeth (l973); Grant Wood: The Regionalist Vision (1983); Seeing Gertrude Stein, Five Stories (2011-12); and most recently, Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern (2017-2019).

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at fundforsandwich.org. All proceeds from the event benefit The Fund for Sandwich, a permanent endowment fund which supports nonprofits serving the Sandwich community through ongoing grantmaking.

Corn will also sign copies of her fully illustrated book about the artist which can be purchased at the event ($15). Cash or check sales only.

Proof of vaccination and masks will be required to attend this event.
