The Harwich Fund Awards $1,000 Grant to Cape Cod Children’s Place

SOUTH YARMOUTH— The Harwich Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation recently awarded a $1,000 grant to the Friends of Harwich Early Childhood Advisory Council in partnership with Cape Cod Children’s Place to support its “Science Arts!” in-home, discovery-based learning program for children. The grant was funded, in part, with a generous donation from the Guild of Harwich Artists to encourage the arts in any form within the Harwich community.

This winter, families will receive activity kits designed to introduce children to basic science concepts, such as gravity, diffusion, symmetry, and principles of engineering and chemistry through playful exploration of materials. Each week, students and teachers will come together virtually to share discoveries and talk about the creative results. Participants will also receive a picture book related to the project theme.

“The current health protocols only allow us to conduct in-person programming outdoors,” said Cape Cod Children’s Place Coordinator Lucy Gilmore. “During the cold, winter months, this program will enable families to have a shared experience from their homes while building social connections and encouraging children’s natural sense of curiosity and creativity.”

This is the second grant The Harwich Fund has provided to support in-home learning through Cape Cod Children’s Place.

“Through the continued generosity of The Harwich Fund, we were able to fund enough kits to kick off this impactful programming for local families who are raising young children,” Gilmore added.

The Harwich Fund was established as a permanent endowment fund of The Cape Cod Foundation to provide resources for the Harwich community now and in perpetuity. To date, it has awarded almost $20,000 to nonprofits serving Harwich residents. Its motto, “Harwich Helping Harwich,” drives the nonprofit organization, supported entirely by donations, to identify and help meet the greatest needs within the community.
