Community Need

Every region of our nation is impacted by the ongoing drug and alcohol epidemic. Cape Cod is no exception. Some members of our community also struggle with other mental and behavioral health challenges, such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies. The number of students reporting mental and behavioral health challenges has more than doubled in the last 10 years. During the pandemic, unemployment, underemployment, feelings of isolation, stress, illness, grief, substance use, depression, and anxiety increased across all age groups, creating an even greater demand for mental and behavioral health programs.

During the pandemic, food insecurity among Barnstable County residents increased 50-70%; local food pantries and food programs reported 100%-400% increases in demand. Those needs have remained elevated.

As our demographics shift and our population continues to age, we need to understand and respond to the specific health needs of diverse populations and expand access and services. The lack of both health insurance and transportation continue to be barriers to accessing care. In addition, the challenges of hiring and retaining workers are significantly impacting the scope and capacity of local healthcare providers and local healthcare options for residents.

Foundation Strategy

The Foundation’s key funding strategies focus on expanding access to health education and healthcare, including mental and behavioral health services and substance use prevention, treatment and recovery programs. We also fund initiatives that promote self-advocacy and self-sufficiency, offer access to healthy, nutritional foods, encourage active lifestyles, and support individuals with disabilities and their caretakers.

    Recent Grantmaking

We have distributed $1.2 million in federal funding across the region to support food access and food security. This funding helped expand access through mobile delivery programs and coordinated deliveries of prepared meals in high-need areas. It helped establish culturally appropriate community gardens and pantries and support innovative partnerships and enhanced programming to respond to continued increase in demand.

    Other Grants Have Supported:

    • Behavioral health services and programs for young people and adults through school and community-based programs.
    • Expanded access to health resources and health education to underserved populations.
    • Enhanced social and recreational programming for adults with disabilities.
    • Assistance programs for Cape Cod cancer patients and their families.
    • Adult day health programs for substance use recovery coaching.
    • Hygiene products for a food pantry.
    • Summer camp experiences for underserved youth.

    FUND BACKGROUND
In 1997, we received a bequest from Jesse Grimes. Six years earlier, Mr. Grimes and his wife, Juanita, entrusted Foundation leaders to establish a named permanent endowment fund upon their deaths. Their goal was simple: to enable the Foundation to “sponsor and support humanitarian services” for Cape residents in perpetuity.
