Foundation Strategy
In the 1964 children’s novel, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Charlie Bucket found one of the five golden tickets hidden in five Wonka candy bars. The enviable prize was a tour of the eccentric founder’s top secret chocolate factory.
Unrestricted gifts are like Golden Tickets. They give the Foundation a valuable opportunity to deploy resources wherever they’re needed and to be flexible in our response as the needs in the community change over time. They allow us to do things we may never have been able to do otherwise. We have supported cross-sector collaborations, developed our Nonprofit Capacity-Building Grant Program, seed-funded new community projects, and advanced several nonprofit leadership development initiatives. Chief among them: We helped bring The Institute for Nonprofit Practice’s (INP) Core Certificate Program to the Cape and Islands (featured below). We have also been able to leverage Unrestricted Funds to support unfunded or underfunded initiatives in partnership with our Field-Of-Interest and Donor-advised Funds, participate in local funders collaboratives to collectively support community projects, and bring innovative and unique programming to Cape Cod.

Nonprofit Leadership Development: INP Core Certificate Program
Our nonprofit leaders take on our community’s biggest challenges and work for the greater good. While they are highly skilled, they need resources to develop those skills and a powerful network of support.
In 2016, the Foundation spearheaded a local funders collaborative to bring the Institute for Nonprofit Practice’s nationally recognized Core Certificate Program to Cape Cod and the Islands at no cost to participants. Since then, the collaborative has pooled over $570,000 in resources to allow 150 local leaders from different organizations across the Cape to participate in this intensive, year-long program.
Graduates receive a certificate in Social Impact Management and Leadership from the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University and emerge with the skills, knowledge, and networks they need to make strategic, mission-driven decisions that center on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) and effect meaningful change in their organizations and beyond. In addition to individual development and group problem-solving, the program focuses on building a local, diverse peer network that will continue to support and strengthen leaders and encourage collaboration long after the program ends. While the Foundation has a discretionary fund for Workforce and Career Development, the available resources were not sufficient to cover our part of the collaborative’s funding to this initiative. Most of our resources came from the Unrestricted Fund.
Sidebar
Over time, the informal local funders collaborative that launched the INP initiative above became a more formalized, strategic partnership: The Cape Cod and Islands Funders’ Network. Members meet to share information about community needs, initiatives, and resources; review proposals from the nonprofit sector; and discuss collaborative funding for greater community impact. The Network is open to anyone who is funding or who is interested in funding nonprofit initiatives across Cape Cod and the Islands. The goal is two-fold: to inform each funder’s individual grantmaking so we can fund unmet needs across the region without duplicating efforts; and to pool resources to fuel larger initiatives that lead to systemic change.

FUND BACKGROUND
Worthington Campbell, Jr. established this unrestricted endowment fund with the Foundation as part of his estate. He knew that community needs would evolve over time and wanted to provide the Foundation resources to help meet those needs in perpetuity. The Board made two strategic decisions. They established the Foundation’s Civic Leadership Endowment Fund with 20% of the funding to build resources for our ongoing community work. The 80% balance was earmarked for external grantmaking
All figures updated April 2024.
