Community Forums

In 2021, The Cape Cod Foundation started hosting virtual community forums to share information about the region’s current needs, resources, and opportunities for community engagement with a larger audience. Local experts convened to discuss food security and food access, housing and homelessness, mental and behavioral health, and supporting youth across Cape Cod. The 2022 forum, “Women and Girls Across Cape Cod” introduced The Foundation’s new initiative, The Fund for Women and Girls. The forums have been recorded and are available to review below, along with other resource material. We’d like to thank all our presenters and sponsors for making these important community conversations possible.

“Women and Girls Across Cape Cod

PRESENTED: SEPTEMBER 29, 2022
Less than 2% of all charitable giving in the United States is directed specifically to nonprofits serving women and girls*. The cycle of poverty continues. The inequities in pay and job opportunities are still great. The barriers to affordable housing and childcare are incredibly high. So are the unemployment rates. The challenges faced by women and girls of color persist. Yet, while the statistics are sobering, there are ways to deepen our community investment in women and girls and amplify our collective impact. The Women and Girls Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation is among them.

“Food Security and Access Across Cape Cod”

PRESENTED: FEBRUARY 25, 2021
In 2018, Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap data indicated that 7.6% of the overall population in Barnstable County was food insecure. Eleven percent of our children fell into that estimate. Because of the pandemic, the national hunger-relief organization then predicted food insecurity among residents in our county would increase 50%. Over the past year, our local food pantries and food programs have reported 100%-300% increases in demand for services.

Christine Menard, Executive Director, Family Pantry of Cape Cod: Co-Chair, Cape Cod Hunger Network

The lack of affordable, diverse housing options on Cape Cod impacts every part of our community. “Mental and Behavioral Health Across Cape Cod”

PRESENTED: JUNE 17, 2021
The arrival of a vaccine and lower COVID-19 rates have given us renewed optimism. However, the pandemic has exacerbated the mental and behavioral health needs of Cape Cod residents, and its impact will be long-lasting. For many, social isolation, feelings of uncertainty, emotional and physical loss, and the inability to access care have increased over the past year. In addition, unemployment, loss of housing, and food insecurity have added to the psychological burden of residents across every age and demographic, especially our most vulnerable.

PRESENTERS
Kristin O’Malley, President and CEO, The Cape Cod Foundation
Allie Anderson, Chief Clinical Officer, Gosnold, Inc.
Karen Gardner, CEO, Community Health Center of Cape Cod
Cindy Horgan, Executive Director, Cape Cod Children’s Place

“Supporting Youth Across Cape Cod”

PRESENTED NOVEMBER 4, 2021
In September 2021, our young people returned from remote learning to the classroom. While this signaled a shift back to “normal,” we must continue to address the impacts of the pandemic and make the educational, social, and emotional development of our community’s youngest residents an ongoing priority. Join The Cape Cod Foundation and a panel of local experts to learn more about the needs of young people on Cape Cod, how these needs are being addressed, and how we can work collaboratively to provide resources to support our young people now and in the future.
