FUND BACKGROUND
In 1995, we received a $25,000 Challenge Grant from The Massachusetts Environmental Trust, which had partnered with community foundations across the state to fund initiatives that met its criteria. After completing the Challenge, The Cape Cod Foundation Board of Directors established The Environmental Trust Fund of Cape Cod to continue to build discretionary resources and invest in environmental conservation, preservation, and restoration projects and programs across Cape Cod.

FOUNDATION STRATEGY
Our grantmaking priorities are to invest in the preservation, conservation, and restoration of natural resources, particularly water and wetlands; to promote public education and outreach on environmental issues facing our region; and to support educational experiences for children and youth. Our report, Connecting Cape Cod, summarizes other recent grants impacting the fishing industry, climate change, water quality, and environmental preservation in our region.

RECENT GRANTMAKING
Creating a Responsible Environment (CARE), $10,000
Since 2012, CARE for the Cape and Islands has led 60 projects, engaged volunteers at annual CARE Days and beach cleanups, and provided numerous educational programs, including five years of bi-annual summits to bring organizations together to find solutions to plastic pollution and litter issues. In 2022, The Cape Cod Foundation awarded CARE a $10,000 grant to support capacity-building efforts. They used the funding to engage consultants to assist with branding, theory of change, and program evaluation, among other key topics. As a result, they developed strategic action and development plans to expand the board, hire a deputy director, evaluate and expand funding, and strengthen brand recognition. CARE then received a 3-year grant from NOAA in partnership with WHOI Sea Grant for the “Cape Cod Coalition to Shift Tourism Businesses to Sustainable Serviceware” program.
