Competitive Grant Programs: Grant Tips

Take a few moments to review the best practices in grant writing recommended by the Foundation staff.

  • Read and follow guidelines carefully
  • Ensure that your program fits within the guidelines; confirm with funder staff if needed
  • Know and understand the funder’s grantmaking prior to contacting or applying
  • Avoid jargon and acronyms. Write plainly and avoid sector-specific vocabulary that may be unfamiliar to grant reviewers
  • Have someone who isn’t as familiar with the background of your proposal read your draft and provide feedback on clarity
  • Answer application questions being asked, in the order being asked
  • Using bullet points and numbering etc. can be helpful
  • Draw a direct connection between community need and proposal
  • Demonstrate experience or ability. This is your opportunity to brag!
  • Ensure all partnering organizations are on-board and demonstrate this in your proposal
  • If a grant is denied, follow up for feedback to improve and repurpose the application for the future, if applicable
