FUND BACKGROUND
In 1995, Mimi McConnell, a member of the Foundation’s Board, organized a fundraising party at the home of the late Dorothy and Herb Carver. The guest of honor was Dr. T. Berry Brazelton (1918-2018). The Barnstable resident, referred to as Dean of American Pediatrics, was a nationally recognized expert on child development. At the event, he spoke about the importance of the relationship between parents and children and the need for supporting and nurturing that relationship from the moment of birth. The event raised nearly $15,000 to seed an endowment fund to support Cape Cod children and families: The Community Fund for Young People.

FOUNDATION STRATEGY
For years, we made small grants for camperships, mentoring, and after-school programs from the growing Fund. In 2017, after evaluating community needs and available resources to address those needs, we reconfirmed our commitment to expand access to opportunities and supports for young people and made the Community Fund for Young People one of two priorities for our Vision 2020 fundraising campaign. Over the next three years, we raised over $340,000 for the Fund, doubling its size. Since then, leveraging other available resources, we have supported a variety of youth-focused efforts through the Fund, including scholarships for early childhood programs, the YMCA Cape Cod’s Y-Achievers Program, the hiring of a librarian at the Cape Cod Toy Library, the Recovery Rebuild Alternative Peer Group at Behavioral Health Innovators, and a substantial grant to the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School featured below.

RECENT GRANTMAKING

Cape Cod Tech Foundation, $80,000
In 2022, The Cape Cod Foundation awarded the Cape Cod Tech Foundation (CCTF) an $80,000 grant to support capacity building initiatives, educational and mentoring programs, scholarships, and other needs for currently enrolled students of Cape Cod Regional Technical High School.

Cape Cod Regional Technical High School currently serves more than 650 students from the Mid- to Lower-Cape, Mashpee to Provincetown. It combines traditional academic offerings with the following technical programs: Carpentry, Electrical, Horticulture, HVAC, Plumbing & Heating, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, Health Technology, Dental Assisting, Design & Visual Communication, Information Technologies, Engineering, Auto Collision Technology, Automotive Technology, and Marine Services. Upon graduation, about 60% of CCRTHS alumni will enter the Cape workforce. Some will continue their education at two- or four-year colleges; others will enlist in the military.

To build capacity, The CCFT Executive Director hired an Executive Assistant to assume administrative duties. As a result, he was able to focus on additional fundraising, increasing revenue 428% from the previous year. These flexible resources help meet needs outside the school’s operating budget.

During the 2022/2023 school year, with support from The Cape Cod Foundation’s grant, 166 students received almost $125,000 in scholarships and funding for driver’s education, trade certification, toolships, and emergency assistance from an Angel Fund.

The grant advanced our ongoing work in youth development, education, and workforce development. It also helped create, expand, and increase access to programs while strengthening the school through ongoing capacity building initiatives.

SIDEBAR
To increase impact, two local funders who have donor-advised funds with The Cape Cod Foundation also made additional grants to the Cape Cod Tech Foundation: The Lawrence-Lynch Corp. Foundation for Charitable Giving and The Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Foundation. This exemplifies the power of sharing information and leveraging resources within the Foundation’s community of support.
